OVERVIEW
Lasting Events and Memories ( Campus Thunder '61 - 14th edition)
THE PEACOCK SEASON played two nights to S.R.O. and near capacity and one night to ˝ full house...
We had now passed number 13 and to our astonishment we had well over 350 students trying out for some 45 parts with a technical staff of 40.
Rehearsals began as usual with fall-outs and placements, but to a green cast who probably never heard of a Thunder show, it was hard, but Mr. "D" rounded out the cast to what critics said was the best show in over the past five years.
Scenery and costumes were second only to the cast and with the tremendous sets made at the Klein and the colorful costumes executed by Madge Neary, Campus Thunder again hit an all-time high in the eyes of the populace of Bridgeport:
The Program Committee again made a handsome profit which was turned over for the cast party held at Mary Journey's Inn until the wee hours of the morning. From there the entire cast went over to the Brideport Motor Inn for a breakfast snack until 10:00 the following A.M. Another first for the Thunder show. According to all this should be a new tradition.
Thunder music makers again did another outstanding score on the twenty-off lively numbers. From the minute the overture began to the "Peacock Season" right through "A Lady's Fan", "Cinderalice" and "Something to Live For", the audience was captivated by the score and music from the pens of past song writers along with Gus Meyers and Adelaine Meath. Credits to Stage Manager John Reed for the seventh consecutive year, Gerry Greenstein as Technical Director, and Doris Newman as Business Manager.
The choregraphy again outstanding by Judy Blair for the fourth year.
Fifi is Back....
Yes, after a leave of three years, Fifi arrived back from Paris under the disguise of John Scu!!y -- what more can we say for the Thunderettes! The Genie was Ken Byers. Leads were Roberta Leoffler, Ed Brackman and Beverly Kaufman.
Sime Neary executed the tremendous cake walk dance sequence in "The Tuxedo Stride". Other top scenes were "Tuxedo Park", "Cinderalice, The 3 Steeds and the finale, The Four Hundred Ball.
The plot involves the show girl who marries a very wealthy society man who ups and dies. We see our heroine in a triangle with another, for the last invitation to the 400 of American Society. The co-plot shows the son of the heroine, bitter enemy in love with an Indian girl, completely out of his class, until they find out she is from royalty.
All turns out fine when another person drops out of the 400 thus leaving two vacancies for the ~eroine and her arch enemy, now friends.
The finale of Act One is the longest scene in the history of any Thunder edition, lasting 29 minutes.
Original songs featured in this edition by Sime Neary, Hart Martin, Bill Pura and Edward Marfial were:
- "At the Music Hall"
- "Where's the Groom?" "Idiosyncrasies (of love)" "Tuxedo Park"
